It’s almost time of year again for Chinese New Year gatherings and reunions! Last year I posted a printable dragon angpow/hongbao, for a colouring in craft activity. This year, my new pattern features birds, with oranges and flowers, and there are two versions available, one with a pink background, and the other blank - if you want to save some printer ink you can print this one and colour it in red or pink with some pencils or markers. The text on this angpow is 大吉大利 - one of the customary new year greetings, da ji da li, which means great luck/ good fortune. The giving of red envelopes/ angpows containing money is a Chinese tradition which dates back centuries, and is customary at special events such as weddings and Chinese New Year gatherings. The colour red is associated with good luck, although sometimes pink and gold envelopes are given also. Traditions vary from family to family, but frequently angpows are given out by married couples, or by the elder members of the family to the younger members. Mandarin oranges are also exchanged. Happy Lunar New Year! It's exciting to see all the dragons around Singapore, and very inspiring for new art projects (watch this space as some new dragon-themed collections are about to drop!) In the meantime I have another new, free art project to share! I have to admit that, even though free angpow/ red packets are available in so many places, each year I do buy a few new designs - I love the artwork (although I am not sure what to do with all the left over year of the rabbit packets from last year)! My next free printable art project is an angpow packet - I know the first few days of the Chinese/ lunar new year has passed, but given the holiday lasts for 15 days then maybe there might still be a chance for gifting, and colouring in is always fun! All you need (apart from the printer) is colouring in pencils/ crayons, scissors and some glue. I've made how-to videos on my youtube channel and on pinterest - my printer ran out of coloured ink mid-way so my version is black and white!
