A short while back I wrote about the floral trend bloomcore and places we can take inspiration from. Today I’m back writing some variations on this same theme: what is bloomcore, and where can you find it? I’ll share some of my own observations on this, and then I have some links you can follow for bloomcore-influenced homewares.

In a profusion of petals and leaves, the bloomcore aesthetic is one of a number of ‘cores’ which has spread across the social media scene over the last few years. Some ‘cores’ seem to align themselves more with aesthetics, like cottage core, and clutter core while others appear more related to a way of being, like the environmentally- conscious underconsumption core.
So what makes bloomcore special? While there is some agreement, there are also many components which might be interpreted in different ways, and I’d like to personally add my own ways in which I think of something as being ‘bloomcore’.

Whatever finer points and patterns you add to bloomcore, what it has at its heart is clearly flowers.
Broadening this out, bloomcore is also understood to include greenery, berries, fruit, and all things flora.

Many writers will also say that bloomcore is about the quiet life - a concept often associated with village life/ rural life. A search on Pinterest for bloomcore will yield many such photos of meadow flowers glistening in the sun, and they do have a quietness and gentleness that would fit this definition.

However I believe that flowers can also be loud, vibrant and full of life - and not always quiet, so my definition of bloomcore is this - anything floral, from the more frequently referenced palettes of natural hues and pastels, right through to the bright, bold and colourful.
BLOOMCORE IN FLORAL REPEATS
When I first came across the concept of bloomcore, the idea seemed to naturally suggest a designer to me, who was famous long before anything was a ‘core’ - Laura Ashley. The ditsy gentle floral repeats from the 80s encapsulate the decorative aspects of bloomcore and the quiet life ideal. Speaking of ditsy fabrics, perhaps the most famous of these are Liberty prints, also delicate and decorative, definitely floral - although the range of Liberty prints extends beyond into bigger, more dramatic floral patterns too.
Also bringing floral repeats into stronger colours, Cath Kidston and her floral motifs also continue this trend, and have also been bloomcore long before the bloomcore trend began. BLOOMCORE: BIGGER AND BOLDER
As a variation on the theme of bloomcore which uses repeats which are sometimes monochrome in colour, but still floral in inspiration, look no further than Marimekko. For strong and bold in pattern and both colour, see Lily Pulitzer’s clothing. Some Desigual looks could also fit the bloomcore bill.
