Procreate tip: how to fill shapes with texture

There's one dilemma I have in Procreate, the platform I use and love for all my digital artwork!
That's filling in shapes! It's easy to colour drop and fill in your work with a flat airbrush style texture, but trying to add a different texture also is not so easy. In a  few of my works recently I have wanted to create a kind of picture-book style pencil finish, and so I have been looking for a shortcut to fill in shapes which gives me a nice clear outline at the same time as giving me that grainy-style look. 

If you want to try this out yourself, you can watch the youtube video below which I made, which shows my process. As I say in the video notes, there are some other ways to achieve this textured effect, but this is the way I like to fill shapes. 

Here are the steps:

1. Choose an outline brush - I try both peppermint and studio pen in the video. 
2. Choose a relatively pale colour
3. Draw shapes, and fill in using colour drop, as normal – with the pale colour! 
4. Create a second layer, and select 'clipping mask' from the drop down selection menu on the left.
5. Choose your texture brush - maybe peppermint like in the video! 
6. Choose your colour. 
7. Sometimes I merge these layers together when I am done, although I have not done that in this video. 

And there it is! 

I use Procreate for all my designs – whether I start with watercolour or ink, or both, or in the app. Procreate has many free resources for learning.

This app works on ipads (see the list here), so is great for drawing on the go. I use an apple pencil with the ipad (make sure to get the right generation apple pencil to match your ipad – this one I am linking to is an apple pencil second generation (affiliate link).  Sometimes Apple also offers free classes in Procreate, so that is something worth keeping an eye out for!
