There’s a story to my Thursday posts…We’ve been in Singapore for five years. For the first two, the focus was on getting the family through the pandemic. From the time when we were allowed out and about I walked a lot, and took photos in so many interesting locations. So this year, I’m going to post a few retrospective photos each Thursday for #throwbackthursdays. That’s the plan anyway! These three photos were taken on Telok Ayer Street. I discovered it just by chance when I was going to mandarin lessons nearby. The two buildings here today are a few of many wonderful historical places in this neighbourhood, and you can get here easily from the Telok Ayer MRT station, it’s definitely worth a visit, and from this area you can then walk through Ann Siang Hill to Chinatown if you’d like to keep exploring.
This area is full of history - it was originally adjacent to the sea and many immigrants would arrive in this area, and the temples and shrines gave them a chance to give thanks for their safe passage. The first two photos are of the Thian Hock Keng Temple, which is the oldest Hokkien temple in Singapore, which grew from an earlier shrine dedicated to the Goddess of the Sea, Mazu.
